Limited Edition Camp Fire Brooches
Only 86 pieces will be made and offered for sale within this series. The entire proceeds ( $23.25 ) from the sale of these pieces will be donated to relief projects for victims of the Camp Fire in Northern California.
Why 86 pieces? Part of this project is to honor and remember those who perished in the fire. As of today (1-4-19), 86 individuals have died in the fire.
Why are we being a bit vague on where the funds will actually be place? The needs of victims changes through time. Where in the first days, housing, food and basic clothing was needed, the needs are changing and continue to evolve. When this project is complete, we will look at current needs and direct the funds to those efforts.
Our handmade clay brooches are individually decorated which makes each a unique item. Even though we have carefully fire each piece in the same manner, variation will occur and creating a unique quality upon each piece. The brooch you will receive will be similar to those pictured.
These items are currently in the final stages of production. They are scheduled for completion around the 10th of January, 2019. We anticipate shipping them about the 15th of January.
Jim rarely signs his work, but each of these pieces will be signed and numbered in the order in which they were decorated. Each piece is mounted on a black card.
On the day that the pieces were fired, the process was captured in video. A video of the process, from cutting the blanks from clay, through mounting on the cards is being produced. As of today (1-4-19), "footage" is still needed of some of the final stages, but process through washing the pieces is "on film." Some of the video was unfortunately corrupted. We're still trying to get the material recovered. Much of the footage is fine and will be published.
Information about the Camp Fire will be included with each piece.
The brooch takes several weeks to form, sponge, dry and then the firing can take place. When the brooches are removed from the kiln, they are individually dipped in the obvara mixture and delicately handled through the process. After the obvara is applied, each is washed, dried and a pin backed finding is added to finish the piece. Six coats of semi-matte acrylic is applied to the brooch to complete the piece, the six coats yields a depth to the surface that is very rich. Each piece is approximately 2 1/4 inches in diameter.
You can read more about the Obvara firing technique used to make this piece HERE.
Remember that because of the handmade nature of the brooch, some variations should be expected. The quality is always the same standard that LickinFlames is known for, but some variations in decorative patterns needs to be allowed. We know you will love the piece that is shipped.
