Today was one of those days when I needed to take some time to work on product ideas that might introduced later in 2016...maybe even into 2017. The rabbit is a bit of yard art and will be attached to a stainless steel rod and then some do dads added for more interest. The folks who built out the house here in Nevada City seemed to like yard art like we do...and butterflies and bunnies top their list of subject matter...thus the bunny idea. So thankful they didn't like scorpions and snakes. The cabochons are the next step in our marketing and sales tests for our new "Shawl Bobbies"...a bobby pin decorated in our carbon painting, raku and soon...saggar fired cabochons.
Every so often when I get a piece finished, I just need to sit and hold it for a while. This is one of those pieces. The depth of the surface is just unbelievable. I know what I did to get all this to happen, but still it's a wonderful surprise. There is no glaze on this piece...the clay is polished when damp and additional layers of colored clay are added and polished also. The piece is bisqued and then fired in a saggar technique with three chemicals that provide gases (and why I wear a full face respirator) for more color and horsehair just because it's cool. Not only does the combination of techniques create some pretty cool eye candy...this piece feels great! It is are smooth like a satin and not as "mechanical" as with a glaze. One can almost translate the glow into the feel. |
